As the Coastal GeoTools conference opens, MAPPS is pleased to be a strong partner with the NOAA Office for Coastal Management in the promotion of “Digital Coast.”
Legislation in the U.S. Congress to elevate Digital Coast from a project to a fully authorized program, S.110, has already passed the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation in the newly seated 115th Congress. MAPPS Government Affairs Manager, John “JB” Byrd, has been leading a coalition of organizations (American Planning Association, Association of State Floodplain Managers, Coastal States Organization,
MAPPS, National Association of Counties, National Estuarine Research Reserve Association, National Society of Professional Surveyors, National States Geographic Information Council, The Nature Conservancy) working with Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and a bipartisan group of Senators, in support of the bill.
This bill unanimously passed the Senate last year, so early action in the new Congress increases our chances for enacting this bill into law in 2017. MAPPS was honored to be recognized by Senator Baldwin in her promotion of the Digital Coast bill.
In the House, the Digital Coast bill will soon be reintroduced by Representative C. A. “Dutch” Ruppersberger (D-MD) and Representative Don Young (R-AK).
MAPPS appreciates the strong partnership it enjoys with Nicholas “Miki” Schmidt, Chief of the Science and Geospatial Division for NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management. In recognition of this partnership, and Miki’s service to MAPPS, the geospatial and coastal management communities, and the American public, Miki was awarded the MAPPS Public Service Award in 2011.
Digital Coast is just one program and legislative initiative that MAPPS advocates to serve the public and expand the role of, and opportunities for, the private sector geospatial community. Join MAPPS on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on Wednesday, March 15 to meet with members of Congress on issues affecting the surveying, mapping and geospatial profession, during the MAPPS Federal Programs Conference, held in conjunction with the MAPPS-NSPS National Surveying, Mapping and Geospatial Conference.
This year’s event is March 13-15 at the Sheraton Hotel in Silver Spring MD. Make your hotel reservations TODAY! For the rate of $169 (single) per night, be sure to make your reservation before February 13.
