Aerial Services opened a new office location on March 8, 2010, completing a nearly two year journey after the 2008 Midwest floods. The facility is optimized to augment Aerial Services’ production of geospatial and mapping services.
Disastrous Flood Saga
In June 2008, Aerial Services’ home of over 30 years was destroyed during the record-breaking Midwest floods. One floor was totally submerged, a second floor saw water up to the hips, and a third floor had water at your feet. Only one level was spared. After the flood event passed, Aerial Services decided to move on from the site, and in late April 2010, the building was demolished.
A New Beginning
Out of every ending comes a new beginning, and soon after moving into a leased site in the Cedar Falls Technology & Industrial Park, Aerial Services purchased a plot of land next-door to begin the process of developing a long-term home.
Aerial Services employees worked with Levi Architecture and the City of Cedar Falls to plan the new facility from the ground up. As Spring 2010 approached, Aerial Services began plans to make the move into the new office at 6315 Chancellor Drive. Employees were anxious to settle into their office space and finally land permanently. The big move took place Friday, March 5, 2010, with production work resuming the following Monday. Due to the joint effort between the company and public officials, the City of Cedar Falls awarded the company the “Redevelopment Investor Award” in April 2010.
New Headquarters Changes Company
The new office vastly improved the company’s workspace, certainly over the temporary facilities and even beyond their previous home at 2120 Center Street. Designed from the ground up and customized to fit their specific needs, the new office was laid out with 16 offices and a large open workspace in the center of the building that allows for up to 20 or more employees. Computer and technological needs were given a high priority, and wiring and growth concerns were proactively addressed to ensure long-term usability and upgradeably of these systems. The executive board room overlooks the nearby Prairie Lakes Nature Preserve and is an impressive space for business meetings. Throughout the facility, windows were utilized to allow natural light and views of the Preserve.
Needless to say, employees’ offices, new furniture, comfortable work and break space, and other amenities lead to greater employee productivity and effectiveness. The site even includes a pleasant patio off the kitchen, shower facilities for those exercising on the nearby Preserve trails, an apple orchard on the site which was protected during construction, and many other features making working at the site a pleasant experience.
